School‘s out for SUMMER!

It’s the holiday we all look forward to the most – the summer school holiday.

Six glorious weeks of fun with countless plans and activities, ultimately ending in slight boredom and a strange feeling of looking forward to school (would you believe).

This summer, Elite Adventures are back with our summer holiday challenge which aims to get children outside and active. In response to ongoing research, we are looking for school age children that would like to get involved and take on our summer holiday walking challenge.

A study conducted by the British Heart Foundation, has shown that by age 11, children are doing an hour less of physical activity a week than they were at age 6.

Monitoring the behaviour of more than 2,000 children, from 57 schools
across South West England, statistics currently show that children become 17 minutes less active per week, every year. The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that children do an hour of physical activity every day however, research suggests that only 41% of children achieve this by the time they leave primary school.

A study published in March 2022 found that 14.4% of reception age children (age 4-5) are obese, with a further 13.3% overweight. At age 10-11 (year 6), 25.5% are obese and 15.4% overweight. This data is from 2020/21 and is gathered as part of the National Child Measurement Programme. These figures show large increases on the previous year (2019/20), when 9.9% of children aged 4-5 and 21.0% of children aged 10-11 were obese.

Therefore, to support pupils in improving both their physical and mental health, Elite Adventures are extending our virtual challenges to school age children throughout the UK. We offer 4 virtual challenges; all of which can be tracked using free apps such as; Strava, Run keeper, Zwift and Mapmyrun, along with medals and certification.

The Hadrian’s Wall challenge is infamous amongst UK hillwalkers, spanning the entire width of the country at over 135km stands the UKs longest Roman built wall.

You can start anytime between July and September 2023, the School Holiday Challenge is a virtual event which means you can run, walk or cycle the distance over the summer holidays, absolutely anywhere.

As an added bonus, every entry into our 2023 summer holiday challenge will enter your school into our prize draw to win a fantastic sports package for the PE department.

Why not Involve the whole family! Take on the challenge with an entry each, or do it together as one – you decide.

Good luck!
