Beginners Map Reading Weekend Coventry

If you’ve ever wanted to feel more confident exploring the outdoors, this is the perfect place to start. Our Beginners Map Reading Weekend is designed to take you from relying on digital maps and phone GPS to confidently navigating using a traditional map and compass.

Across two enjoyable and hands-on days, you’ll learn the fundamental navigation skills every adventurer should know. The weekend begins with classroom-based sessions where you’ll get familiar with map symbols, contours, scales, and compass use. You’ll quickly learn how to plan routes, measure distances, and interpret the landscape around you.

Once you’ve built your foundation, we’ll take those skills outside. You’ll put theory into practice in the natural surroundings of Rough Close Scout Campsite in Coventry, developing real confidence as you navigate through woodland paths and open countryside.

This course isn’t about tests or pressure – it’s about learning through doing. You’ll be supported throughout by friendly, experienced instructors who’ll give you personal guidance and plenty of time to practise. With limited group numbers, you’ll receive tailored feedback to make sure you’re getting the most out of the experience.

By the end of the weekend, you’ll not only understand how to read a map and use a compass, but you’ll also have the confidence to head out on your own adventures – whether that’s a countryside walk, a hiking trip, or a mountain challenge.

Who Is This Event For?

This course is ideal for beginners with little or no navigation experience, hikers, runners or outdoor enthusiasts who want to build confidence using a map and compass and people who enjoy the outdoors but want to feel more independent and capable in new terrain.

Whether you’re preparing for bigger adventures or simply want to stop relying on phone GPS, this weekend will give you the skills to navigate with confidence.
